Policies and Guidelines for Campus Departments

To ensure consistency in the use of the University's name and logos, all products, signage, or packaging bearing reference to Florida State University must be produced by manufacturers licensed through the University's licensing agent, the Collegiate Licensing Company (CLC). Officially licensed manufacturers are required to carry appropriate product liability insurance and to meet benchmarks of the University Code of Conduct with respect to labor standards.

Products manufactured for resale or fundraising are subject to our customary royalty rate.Products manufactured for internal consumption are exempt from royalties. Exempt orders must have a completed royalty exemption form (PDF) turned into the licensee at the time the order is placed.

Internal Consumption is defined as products necessary for departmental operation, educational materials and staff uniforms

Procedures for Obtaining Art & Product Approvals:

  • FSU has more than 500 licensees nationwide with many in-state or local. (***Link to list of local licensees to be released.***)
  • For help in locating a licensee for the products you need contact FSU's Licensing Office at 644.8690 or email Garrett O'Connor, Assistant Licensing Director, at <goconnor2@admin.fsu.edu>.
  • Take your artwork to a licensed manufacturer or ask the licensee to create the artwork for you.
  • The licensee will submit the artwork to FSU's Licensing Office for approval and remit royalties to CLC on FSU's behalf.
  • For any other questions contact FSU's Licensing Office at 644.8690 or email Garrett O'Connor at <goconnor2@admin.fsu.edu>.

Policies Concerning the Approval of FSU Related Artwork:

  • To protect Florida State University's trademarks and promote a consistent visual identity, FSU marks may vary in size, but cannot otherwise be altered, tampered with, modified, incorporated into other marks, or overprinted with other words or design elements. Please refer to the Identity Guide for specifications for use of the Official University seal.
  • Any campus department wishing to purchase product that bears University trademarks for an event they are hosting, must incorporate the organization or department name in the design or on the product.
  • Use of a current student-athlete's name or likeness on commercial merchandise is a violation of NCAA rules and may result in the student-athlete being declared ineligible. Any use of a student-athlete's name, nickname, or picture must be approved by the Florida State Athletics Compliance Office. Contact Brian Battle at 644.7925 or <bbattle@fsu.edu>.
  • Use of intellectual property owned by a third party must be approved by that entity in writing and submitted to the licensed manufacturer along with the artwork. For example, if you wish to use artwork, slogans, or trademarks created by someone not associated with your department, a written release allowing for such use is required before Florida State will grant design approval. This type of approval process often takes weeks, so allow enough time for such approval to be obtained.
  • Campus departments may include a sponsor name/logo along with University trademarks on products and certain forms of advertising for approved events only. The department's name must be included in the design to communicate that the relationship is a partnership with a particular department and not an endorsement by the University as a whole. Based on the scope of the program, a rights fee may be assessed to the sponsor to associate its name with Florida State University. University departments will need to secure approval for any joint advertisement from both the Licensing Office and Sports Marketing to insure that there are no conflicts with corporate sponsors or other University contracts.
